#plent2010 Using learning spots to form our PLE

In order to learn, we go to many
spots to seek info and build connections with co-learners, like elgg,
moodle, twitter hash tag, flikr group and so on. I used to join google
groups to learn how to use Python( a programing language). These are
all learning spots. We build our PLE by visiting these spots and shape
our learning networks.

The following links can be a kind of Navigation:
Course: http://ple.elg.ca/course/moodle/course/view.php?id=3
Forum: http://ple.elg.ca/course/moodle/mod/forum/index.php?id=3
RSS: http://connect.downes.ca/thedaily.xml
Flickr group: http://www.flickr.com/groups/plenk2010/
and we can give presentation or ask question in Elluminate
.

Soon many other spots will appear, I belive.

Important skills to use learning spots:

* Ask a question and then find related info and figures, try to form a meaningful dialogue and build connections.
* Join the discussion that have your eyes.
* Start from familar spots and then go to unfamilar spots.

TPCK course for Chinese middle school biology teachers

Rencently, I am preparing and making lesson plans for my TPCKcourse. TPCK stands for “Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge”. Inorder to teach a science concept well, the teacher need to know many kind of knowledge, such as students’ prior concept, subject matter knowledge, pedagogical knowledge, how to assess, how to orgnize the content, how to use ICT to promot students’ learning.  So teaching is not a easy thing, and with the fast development of  science and technology, it becomes more and more a challenge.

Now, China is promoting the 8th Curriculum Reform in basic education. Middle school biology teachers will meet more challenge than before, so they expecially neen more help and suport on their professional development. In such a background, I start the TPCK curriculum. It is a online curriculum and totally free. It’s based on two network leaning community, Biology Teaching House(Bioteahouse,生物教学茶吧:http://sites.google.com/site/bioteahouse) and it’s neighborhood community Social Learn Lab(SLL, 教育大发现:http://sociallearnlab.org). SLL has many members who are interested or experts on educational technology. So we can get technical suport from SLL. Most members fo Bioteahouse are  biology teachers, and some of them are biology education researchers, some are college students who are planning to be biology teachers in the future.

The Curriculum materials will all be online and open to have access. The activities will be orgnized both online and offline. Some middle schools will attend this course, so I am planning to organize unconferrences in these school which allow everyone to come and share and contribute. Hope everyting will go well.

今天也尝试用Scribefire这个Firefox的插件来写博客

Sometime I feel hard to express myself in English, so I write in Chinese and keep down my thoughts first.

Brain Storm in BKU with Prof. François Taddei and other students

Changing your belief and behavior and  then we change and improve our system.

If the system didn’t change, I will not change my teaching.

As to our life and our living enviroment, are we active or passitive?

The government is our son. We raise him to grow up to help not just to give orders. We will love and guide our son, and also punish him for doing wrong. If he is planning to murder and have not regrets, we will stop him and replace it with a better son.

Prepare to develop a curriculum for biology teachers

I haven’t thought out the name of the curriculum. But I do believe that begining teachers need a curriculum which specially designed for them.  The goal of this curriculum, may be not one but many, is to promote teachers’ professional development. They can learn how to design a lesson, how to use science inquiry as a teaching strategy, how to reflect on thier teaching practices, how to write a article to publish, how to find or found a community for suport. I want make this kind of curriculum open to any one who want to learn. If the learners can pass some examination then they can be learning leaders in our community(BioTeaHouse).

Well, before action, It is just an idea which is not new. So the point is to try and make it ture!

What can I contribute to the Open Education Conference?

In order to apply for one of these scholarships, please write a blog post (referring back to this one) describing:

1. What you would “bring” to the conference? What can you contribute, be it a willingness to volunteer to moderate a session, some special expertise or project, an already accepted proposal…
2. What you see as the most critical issue facing you in  your efforts around Open Education, and how you think the conference can help you address it?

The above paragraphs are from Open Education Conference :http://openedconference.org/archives/324

I got this news from a friend Stian Haklev who received the award last year. He said this conference helped him a lot on his study, I make up mind to have a try–apply for one of these scholarships.  I don’t know what can I contribute, but I do want to know what’s other countiies open education like in practice, What I can learn from their explorations and experiences, which can help China, a country who have 1/6 population of the would.

If I can make some contribution, I think I would make an introduaction of Teacher Education System and some related Policy in China and my recently pracitse on biology teacher learning community.  Open Education can mean a lot to China, because China’s 700 million population are presents, and most of the present families can not afford tuition fees for their children. University and the Chinese government now is pursuing a policy of free teacher training, students who participate in this program don’t have to pay their tuition, they can also received living aid from the government, but after graduation, they must return to their home town and work as a teacher for 10 years. Is this policy a good way out? Is Open Education more suitable for China? If so, teacher education of course should be firstly considered and put into practise in my opinion, but how. I have recently done some practical work,  the idea is very simple and the technology platform is very low-cost , I created a googlegroup, named BioTeaHouse , it is primarily designed  for secondary school biology teacher and educational researchers to communicate and learn together. With the development of the community, I feel more and more the importance of curriculum development, and BioTeaHouse is more and more like a big school, everyone can participate in the discussing, learning, sharing, everyone is as a student and at the same time as a teacher. How can we let this community develope into a public free teacher education school, which will let more people have access to teacher training and make them becoming outstanding teachers or learning leaders in the network. It may effectively promote and popularize the education of all children, no matter he or she is poor or not. Any practice and efforts in this direction,  I think,  is worthful and significant.

At present, I am a PhD candidate in teaching and learning in College of Life Science in Beijing Normal University. And I am aslo an active member of the very innovative social network for open education and Web 2.0 education called SocialLearnLab.  Xiuli Zhang and her friends are the founders and orgnizers of this social network.

All about pedagogical content knowledge(PCK)

PCK is a kind of teacher knowledge and beliefs which enable teachers to help students to learn a particular topic-related knowledge easily. Lots of reasearcher have do lots of studies of PCK. Here I collect some web links which may be useful for students and researchers who are now studying PCK.
